Eagle Idaho History:
Eagle Island was originally named Illinois Island in 1863 by Truman C. Catlin after his home state. He was persuaded to rename the island Eagle Island due to a large number of Bald Eagles nesting along the Boise River on the island. Eagle Island is now a state park and is included in the city of Eagle Idaho.
Thomas Hugh Aikens a Nova Scotian surveyor moved to Eagle Island in the 1870s. In the 1890s began to purchase land on the north side of the Boise River. Aikens then began a campaign to build a bridge across the river however Star Idaho also campaigned to have the bridge built at their community location. The county commissioners decided the location of the new bridge would be settled by a vote of the people. Thomas Aikens hired a luxury carriage to transport local veterans, residents of the Old Soldiers Home, to the polls to vote and provided them a picnic lunch as well. As a result, the location of the bridge at Eagle was decided and was built where it still stands today. The bridge increased the popularity of the area and the population began to grow.
Today Eagle Idaho has an estimated population of over 26000 people. Eagle sits at an elevation of 2566ft.
